BAUME & MERCIER RIVIERA

Though the main emphasis of the Swiss luxury watchmaker this year is on the Ilea collection, they continue to create new chapters in their history of mechanical watchmaking. We shall be bringing you details of the new tourbillon from Baume & Mercier in due course but first, we take a look at the new Riviera watches.

Introduced in the 1970s, the Riviera is a rarity in watchmaking: it is both solidly traditional and resolutely contemporary. Both the XL Diver (40mm diameter) and the XXL Chrono Diver (43mm) present nods to the past – the trademark 12-sided case – as well as the present (the combination of brushed and polish finishes for the case).

Both models offer excellent water resistance at 200 meters; Superluminova on hands, markers and numerals; and unidirectional bezels for true diving enthusiasts. Movements are the ever-reliable ETA 7750 (XXL Chrono Diver) and ETA 2824-2 (XL Diver).

Jet manufacturer Hawker Beechcraft's newest addition to its stable - the US$21 million super-midsize Hawker 4000 - promises to simplify the lives of busy executives with its impressive 3,280-nautical-mile range, and its solid commitment to cutting-edge avionics.

The Hawker 4000 is capable of covering the distance between New York and London without needing to stopover for refueling. This wide range, amidst other features, has hitherto been lacking in other comparable-size business jets, and promises to set the 4000 apart from its peers.

Powered by two Pratt and Whitney Canada engines, which propels the jet to a top speed of 893 km/h (or 55 mph), the 4000 boasts advanced avionics in the form of Honeywall's Primus EPIC integrated avionics system.

The jet’s fuselage is composed of three large pieces, versus more than 10,000 on other traditional business jets. Its carbon composite construction, the first composite jet to receive FAA certification, makes the aircraft lighter, corrosion-free and explains the impressive flight range, not to mention there’s now more room onboard.

The elegantly furnished 4000 can accommodate eight to twelve passengers comfortably. But if you’re thinking of adding one of these to complement your Gulfstream or Bombardier, you would have to brace yourself for a two-and-a-half-year waiting list.

NEW YORK ROOFTOPS

Land is such a premium in certain parts of the world, and New York City is no exception so I found it this Flickr collection of rooftops of the rich and famous in NYC quite interesting.   Some show a suprising amount of green space, whilst others exhibit contemporary designs. Have a browse and see how some of the other half live!

Modern era was started by the structuralists and the cubists, and both the schools gave birth to their own set of designers and design ideas. This clock design is a journey back in time to the modern era where the post modern was not known. The Diamond Clock by George Nelson brings back the classic modern design in a postmodern package and you would wonder about the fourth dimension. This perception defying design has a solid and stark design and would complement any mantle or desk.
The clock has black, white and red colors, which again reminds us of the modern age of design, back then in the 1950s. This Diamond Clock could be included in your home decor to bring a contrast to your postmodern house and savor the joy of modern designs. The Diamond Clock costs $350 and you could get it here. We would like to add that designing must not be limited to creating new designs but must reflect the history of great design and art movements such as cubism, for that is when one could appreciate a cool and chi design such as this.

Swiss fine watchmaking maison Piaget is illustrating its know-how in both haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie with its Secret Watch. A specialty of the house, this is a timepiece that unobtrusively doubles as a watch and a bracelet.

Its elegance and ingenuity – not to mention the dazzling array of diamonds – hides a tremendous amount of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. The final product only hints at this, as the job of the craftspeople is to make it seem effortlessly breathtaking.

In just one example, a jeweler has to painstakingly and progressively fashion a piece of precious metal into the desired shape, based on an asphalt die or mould. For a glimpse of Piaget’s other wonders, check out their entire SIHH collection.
